Where the Client Is

Building a better private practice

Lynn Grodzki takes a look to the future of psychotherapy

I try to be a trend-spotter. I spend a lot of time trying to see where we are going as a profession. I believe that, given the recession and other changes in the health care front, the future of psychotherapy and private practice is getting clear.

Therapists are going to choose one of 3 very different paths to walk. No matter whether you are in a solo private practice or a group practice, chances are you are already headed down one of these…:

1) Insurance driven

2) Consumer driven

3) Belief driven

  1. As usual, Lynn Grodzki has offered novel and insightful ideas about our practices. She is on target in identifying three paths that therapy practices follow. Having worked with the criminal justice system for many years, I suggest a fourth path, the court-driven client. Many therapists miss opportunities for attracting these clients because they underestimate the number of court-referred clients (perhaps one million at any given time) which continue to increase as a result of treatment success and declining state budgets for incarceration.
