• Found an Office

Took look longer than I thought, but got done.  A former professor is renting out her space to me.  It’s very much her space–the teddy bear, the religious figurines–but it’s space.  Am glad. Next up, website, business cards.  Will post on it all.

  • Conference Call: Ethical Service Marketing

Inbox item from Dr. Susan Giurleo of BizSavvyTherapist.com: I think lots of helping professionals are wary of marketing because they are unsure if it can be done ethically. No one wants to manipulate or push their services onto anyone. But this fear of being too “sales-y” stops us from sharing valuable information that can help…

  • Getting Your NPI

Going into private practice? You’re going to need a National Provider Indentifier (NPI)–or so they tell me. Here’s a handy how-to. Short version: Know your social and basic info; get your taxonomy number (that’s if you’re doing the paper app–the online version includes a look-up feature); apply. Can’t yet vouch for any of them (though Lynn Grodzki’s books look good). Here’s an starter list, A to T: Juliet Austin (JulietAustin.com) Joe Bavonese (Uncommon-Practices.com) Diane Dawson (PrivatePracticeMarketingRoundtable.com) Lynn Grodzki (PrivatePracticeSuccess.com)…

  • Evolution of Psychotherapy

Speaking of speaking, the Evolution of Psychotherapy conference approaches. Heavy hitters deliver wisdom (of various weights). Recommended.

This is happening. (Ends tomorrow–Sat., Oct. 17, ’09.)

  • Help for the Helper

New at the WTCI Bookstore, a page of books on clinician self-care (including Help for the Helper by Babette Rothschild). Can’t build a practice if you’re burnt out and over it.

  • Inbox: "A Marathon, Not a Sprint"

From my inbox, an email, from reader/social worker Coleen, chock full of practice start-up advice. Great to get just as the blog is starting. Printed with permission. Thanks, Coleen! I am an avid reader of your earlier blog (SW Test Prep Blog), and want to give you well-earned congratulations on your LCSW. I am (re)taking…
